Just as serious athletes would be foolish for not seeking coaches and trainers to help them learn from the experience of others how best to develop their natural skills, so for the Christian pursuing holiness it is foolhardy not to seek the counsel and direction of wise mentors in the spiritual life. Sister Regina Marie Gorman, OCD, Vicar General Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles a breath of fresh air for lungs who long to breathe the fragrance of God. It is informative, succinct, logical and balanced. Thanks be to God, you have in your hands a simple handbook for seeking God. The journey, however, need not be a complicated one. Ralph Martin, Ph.D, president, Renewal Ministries and author of The Fulfillment of All Desire This book, in a style which is both inspiring and practical, provides some of the Church's most important wisdom about how to respond to this call. The Lord is clearly calling all Catholics into a deeper union with him. What is it? Is it for me? What if I can't find a spiritual director? I can say one positive thing about my experience reading the book: It left me using sword battle as an analogy for human relations and that might be useful somehow. The edition I read presents the book as "the cornerstone of Japanese Culture" and I have absolutely no idea how this book played any significant role in Japanese culture it baffles me. I have a suspicion that all those people who rated this book highly have filled in the gap with their imagination. Furthermore, the topics are elaborated on very little in this book. The book is full of lines such as "research this well," "study this thoroughly," "I cannot elaborate on this in writing" and I'm not sure how these are supposed to evoke any insight in me into anything. I guess I'm supposed to reflect on it and come back to it until I "get it" if there's any wisdom in here. I'm definitely missing something, either due to the translation or my inability to read between the lines. This book puzzled me in that at first glance I seem to have learned nothing else from it than how to hold a sword and attack and enemy, and obvious things like never let your enemy have a chance to recover. I read a translation by Ashikaga Yoshiharu and Rosemary Brant. 6/30/2023 0 Comments Long Way Down by Jason ReynoldsStudy Guide Study Guide Summary Summary and Analysis 1. In a leap of faith-or an act of complete desperation-Jessie begins to rely on SN, and SN quickly becomes her lifeline and closest ally. Is it an elaborate hoax? Or can she rely on SN for some much-needed help? It’s been barely two years since her mother’s death, and because her father eloped with a woman he met online, Jessie has been forced to move across the country to live with her stepmonster and her pretentious teenage son. Just when she’s thinking about hightailing it back to Chicago, she gets an email from a person calling themselves Somebody Nobody (SN for short), offering to help her navigate the wilds of Wood Valley High School. After Roxane finishes her last song, the lights go off, but the guests aren’t concerned as they’re still caught in the rapture of her singing. Many other international dignitaries and businessmen are in attendance, all with their own motives, and the evening is a hit until the end of the program. Hosokawa is only at his party for one reason, to watch famous opera singer Roxane Coss perform. Hosokawa will open one of his factories there and provide a much-needed boost to their economy. In the home of the vice president of an unnamed South American country, a birthday party is being thrown for Japanese business tycoon Mr. It’s very well-written and thought-provoking and will sit on my shelf for years to come. Needless to say, I think this is a book that people should read. Then, after giving it to my best friend and recommending it to lots of people, I used it as the first discussion book for my book club. I read Bel Canto years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Mario Lopez, as the adult Greg does a respectable job of the part, and his Olympic coach was one of the strongest characters in the movie and carried good messages throughout the movie. The subject matter of being a gay athelete in a straight world is carried out in a manner that is suitable for most ages other than young children. Mario Lopez did a creditable job as Greg Louganis and his performance stayed faithful to the book. The chronological order of the movie is carried out well from his youth through adulthood, and there are only a few paths that would have been nice to have been walked further, but overall the points were well made. This was the film story of Greg Louganis' personal great achievements as an Olympic diver and of the struggle to reach that goal with all of the highs, lows and heartbreak of his personal life. His perfectionist streak is both a strength and weakness. Greg's struggle with his dads acceptance of him is a strong theme throughout the movie. You view innocence and manipulation, good motives and bad that are weaved pretty well throughout the movie. You have a feeling of connection with the common people in this movie and their flaws and imperfections. This was a good movie considering it wasn't high budget, and did a great job taking the viewer through Greg's story, which is herioc and tragic. 6/27/2023 0 Comments Last to Know by Never Says DieIt might be just five weeks in Alex Rider's life since the events of Scorpia Rising but fans of the Alex Rider novels have had to wait six years to meet Alex again. Given everything that has happened in Alex's young life, it's not surprising that the past is about to catch up with him… After all, this is the boy who's completed nine successful missions for M16: the teenager who has saved the world (more than once) and effectively brought down the international criminal organisation, Scorpia. Normal, however, is not a word that we associate with this particular fifteen-year-old. Set just five weeks after the events of Scorpia Rising, Alex Rider is living in San Francisco and attempting to adjust to life as a normal high school student. Summary: Packed with fast-paced action, adrenaline and intrigue – not to mention those signature fight scenes that I love so much – Alex Rider is finally back and it was well worth the wait. LaRocca uses the narrative device of found documents to set out the tale. But that is not just where the tale starts. The novella which is the book’s namesake, Things Have Gotten Worse Since Last We Spoke, starts off as a sweet queer story about two women who seem to have found each other in the most unlikely places: an online forum, selling an apple peeler. This is the first time I’ve read any of LaRocca’s work, and I cannot imagine the novella being placed away from its sibling stories. Eric LaRocca became a viral sensation after the original publication of Things Have Gotten Worse Since Last We Spoke, which was nominated for a 2021 Bram Stoker Award. In July of 2022, it was announced that their debut was to be rereleased in hardback via Titan and include two original short stories entitled Things Have Gotten Worse Since Last We Spoke and Other Misfortunes. |
